If you hold a Medicare card, you can obtain a Mental Health Treatment Plan through your GP. This plan provides Medicare rebates for up to 10 psychological sessions per calendar year. Most plans start with 6 sessions, with the option to access up to 4 additional sessions after a review with your GP.
The current Medicare rebate for sessions with Frank is $149.05 per session.
Your referral must be received before or at the appointment for which you wish to claim your first Medicare rebate.
Ensure your referral includes:
Your name, date of birth, and address
Your symptoms or diagnosis
A list of current medications
The number of sessions your are referred for (maximum of 6 in the first referral)
The type of plan (Mental Health Treatment Plan or Psychiatric Assessment and Management Plan)
For individual therapy, Medicare rebates are available with a valid Mental Health Treatment Plan ($149.05 per session).
Medicare doesn't offer rebates for couple therapy or family therapy.
If you have private health insurance, I recommend checking whether your policy covers individual or couple therapy sessions.
If you're looking for bulk-billed appointments, please reach out to discuss availability.
Discernment Counselling (DC) is designed for married or similarly committed couples on the brink of separation/divorce, where one partner is deciding whether to separate/divorce (the "leaning-out" spouse), and the other hopes to restore the relationship (the "leaning-in" spouse).
DC follows a structured process:
A 50-minute screening call to begin, consisting of a 25-minute individual call with each partner to assess suitability for the process,
A 120-minute first session (including intake and assessment questions), and
Up to four 90-minute subsequent sessions.
At the end of each session, clients decide whether to continue the process.
DC is time-bound, creating a sense of urgency around three possible outcomes:
Maintaining the status quo,
Separate/divorcing,
Committing to a 6-months, all-in effort in couples therapy to restore the marriage.
The structure of each session is as follows:
Both spouses present: Check-in (and for the first session: intake)
Spouse 1 present: One-on-one session
Both spouses present: Spouse 1 summarises key elements of their one-on-one session
Spouse 2 present: One-on-one session
Both spouses present: Spouse 1 summarises key elements of their one-on-one session
